GMAC Honored for Economic Development in Detroit
“100 Black Men recognizes SmartEdge by GMAC financial literacy program

DETROIT – GMAC Financial Services and its SmartEdge financial education program received the Excellence Award for Economic Development from The 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit at the chapter's inaugural Excellence Awards Gala on Oct. 4, 2007.

The Excellence Award for Economic Development cited SmartEdge for its mission of promoting financial education to increase awareness of financing options, unlocking the mysteries of personal credit and helping consumers develop sound financial habits.

Don Ferguson, GMAC director of Minority Dealer Development, accepted the award with a special sense of accomplishment because of GMAC's efforts in Detroit.

“We thank the 100 Black Men for recognizing GMAC's efforts in the city of Detroit. I am particularly proud to have played a part in those efforts,” said Ferguson, who has volunteered his time in support of The 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit for several years before being selected to serve as the group's treasurer in 2006. “SmartEdge is more than a job for me; it is truly about giving back to Detroit and the hundreds of other communities around the country where GMAC reaches out through the SmartEdge program. SmartEdge can empower individuals, families and communities to make more informed financial decisions.”

GMAC will conduct at least 15 SmartEdge seminars this year in conjunction with The 100 Black Men at local Detroit schools, churches and community centers. Ferguson estimates 750 to 1,000 people will attend these seminars in Detroit, while many more will access SmartEdge online tutorials. Nationwide in 2007, SmartEdge is on target to deliver its message at more than 2,000 different events reaching more than a million people.

GMAC will also donate a $10,000 SmartEdge book allowance that The 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit will use to award 20 $500 book scholarships to students who compete in the oratorical scholarship contest that The 100 Black Men holds each year in partnership with Detroit Public Schools.

Individuals interested in SmartEdge are invited to attend an upcoming seminar at Wayne State University in Detroit on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 am until noon in the General Lectures Building, room 100 (5045 Anthony Wayne Drive / http://campusmap.wayne.edu/).
